Seller: memol3 (2,799) 100%, Location: Bracknell, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 153264764249 For auction today is a late Victorian, 1880s onwards, travel heater/steriliser for a surgeon in the filed or travelling doctor visiting patients, there is some suggestion this item may have been a heater for hairdressing tongs, but I tend to sway towards a steriliser for medical use. These type of items are not very common now and becoming harder to find and this one is in particularly good condition cosmetically, have not ventured to test it. There is some wear to the item and dulling of the gold coloured plating, which is to be expected over time and usage. The two supports you see spring automatically into place when the lid is opened and will fold down when closing, the heating element is cover wirth a kind of key opening system for secure closure and also act as a dampner to the flame when finished with, the circular key is hinged so when lifted will fold into a half moon allowing to grip firmly to unscrew the cover off, revealing where to put the spirit or paraffin. The lid open up with a push button mechanism and the edges of the lid is nicely patterned, and it measures approx. 3.75 ins length (folded) and 7.5 ins (opened.) An altogether unusual piece and becoming rarer and harder to find, especially in this condition.
